Great White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)

Great White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)

Also known as Trillium grandiflorum, this charming wildflower is native to the U.S. Great White features a pretty trio of white petals that age gracefully to a soft pink hue. In the center of each bloom is a sunny yellow eye that practically sparkles in the filtered sunlight. They grow readily in shady sites, such as woodland areas, rock gardens and shadowed corners of the landscape. The delicate blooms sit amid attractive green foliage that forms a nice backdrop. Blooms appear from April to May on 12-15" stems. We like to see Trilliums in groups beneath deciduous trees, the snowy white blooms bringing light and beauty to the rugged site.

Growing Tips

  • Soil Moisture:

Organic rich (lots of humus), well-drained.
  • Will Tolerate:

Acidic Soil, Clay Soil, Loamy Soil, Sandy Soil
  • Pruning Instructions:

None. Picking a trillium flower does not necessarily kill the plant but damage will result if the green leaves are taken as well. The green leaves are needed to provide nutrients for the plants to survive.
  • Winter Care:

Mulch in late fall for added winter protection.
  • Planting Depth:

Plant so that the top of the root (sprout) is 1" below the soil line
  • Watering Requirements:

Soil should not dry out during the spring and early summer. Plants may go dormant prematurely in the summer when soil dries out.
  • Fertilization Requirements:

Not really needed if planted in an organically rich soil. It may help flower production if you fertilize lightly in early-mid spring.
