Shade Perennials from K. van Bourgondien

Shaded spots in gardens are often overlooked by both garden professionals and homeowners. Don't stop short where the sun doesn't shine brightly all day. Add beauty, color, texture and interest with shade loving perennials like hostas, ferns, caladiums, astilbes and more. We love to see gardens that use a thoughtful blend of hues, forms and heights.

Popular Shade Perennials

  • Astilbes are known for their feathery, plume-like blooms in shades of pink, red, white, and lavender, astilbes can brighten up any shaded garden area.
  • Caladiums add a tropical feel to gardens and landscapes in an array of colors of pink, red, green and white.
  • Ferns provide an elegant beauty and are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They thrive in the shade, and are a great way to add variety to your landscaping.
  • Hostas are renowned for their striking foliage, which comes in various shades of green, blue, and even variegated patterns. These shade-loving perennials are perfect for creating lush ground cover in shaded spots.

How Much Shade Should Shade Perennials Get?

The amount of shade perennials need depends on variety of the plant. Full shade perennial flowers prefer less than four hours of direct sunlight a day. These perennials do best in dappled shade with morning and evening sun. Shade perennials that can grow in partial shade need three to six hours of direct sunlight per day.
