Shima-Nishiki Tree Peony

Shima-Nishiki Tree Peony

Aptly named to describe its vibrant flowers with an unusual pattern, the Japanese translation of this tree peony's name is "Fire Flame." Lush, fiery red blooms boast an irregular, white streaked pattern and a bright yellow, stamen filled center to provide an eye catching contrast. Though the blooms may open all red or all white at first, the pattern will emerge in time, once the plant becomes established. Mildly fragrant flowers and medium green foliage that is deeply divided into oval to lance-shaped leaflets.

Growing Tips

  • Planting Instructions:

Dig a planting hole 12" wide and deep, incorporating some garden compost and fertilizer. Plant this grafted bareroot tree peonies deeply. The graft union should be 3 to 4" below the soil. This will encourage the tree peony to make fresh roots and basal shoots. Do not overwater newly planted tree peonies. This is the biggest cause of failure.

  • Winter Care:

None special, a mulch could be a good idea in the coldest zones the first winters

    Once a year in spring,
