Spotlight on Dahlias

Spotlight on Dahlias

“In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil. And at no season, safe perhaps in Daffodil time, do we get such superb colour effects as from August to November.”

—Rose G. Kingsley (1845-1925)

Autumn is definitely glorious, and of all the flowers still in the field, dahlias are superb. They offer the most vibrant color during the month of October. I’m using today’s blog post to highlight a few of these fall beauties!

With its bright orange color, Hercules Dahlia fits the season perfectly and adds class to fall weddings.  As a flower farmer, I’ve come to rely on it as a proven, prolific bloomer, and it’s the ideal size for floral arrangements. Plus, it pairs well with all different colors and varieties of flowers.

Another spectacular dahlia is the white Fleurel Giant Dinnerplate Dahlia. This showstopper requires staking in the garden or field, but oh, what a statement it makes in the garden—and in floral designs.  When creating arrangements with dinnerplate dahlias, remember to keep them towards the front and give them plenty of support to carry their weight.

Open your garden journal now and list Fleurel as a must-grow for 2022.

And now allow me to introduce a garden favorite, Café au Lait Rosé Dahlia. Its luscious bright color stands out and adds stunning detail to any floral bouquet or arrangement.

In the coming days and month, gardens and fields will take on a different look. It’s time to cherish each last bloom.  Take a moment to walk the garden, sit among the flowers and drink in their beauty. Do this now because cool temperatures are fast approaching, and we’ll be left with only memories to treasure and dreams of a coming spring.
