'Crown on Crown' Crown Imperial (Fritillaria imperialis 'Prolifera')

'Crown on Crown' Crown Imperial (Fritillaria imperialis 'Prolifera')

For a perennial bulb that really wows in the landscape or garden, try this unique Crown Imperial. You can't get much more eye catching than the vibrant red blooms of Crown on Crown. Not one, but two circlets of 5 to 6 large, bell-shaped florets create these striking flower heads. Strong stems shoot straight up, rising to 36" tall, and hold the blooms proudly aloft. As a border plant, Fritillaria is a true standout. But it also makes a fascinating addition to focal point displays or as a perennialized mass planting. Butterflies and pollinators love the multiple sources of nectar this enchanting flower provides.

Growing Tips

  • Planting Instructions:

Plant with 5-6" soil on top of the bulbs and 12-18" apart. Loosen soil well before planting. It is very important that the soil is free-draining. Bulbs can be planted sideways to prevent the stem hole in the bulb from trapping water that could cause bulb rot.
  • Soil Moisture:

Average. Make sure the soil is free-draining. This is very important.
  • Will Tolerate:

Acidic Soil, Clay Soil, Loamy Soil, Sandy Soil
  • Pruning Instructions:

None. Let the plants yellow naturally after flowering if you want the bulbs to perennialize and flower the following year.
  • Winter Care:

Mulch 1-2" in areas with severe frost
  • Planting Depth:

Plant with 5-6" soil on top of the bulb
  • Watering Requirements:

Average water needs. Water regularly, do not overwater
  • Fertilization Requirements:

Once or twice per year in early (and mid) spring. Crown Imperials need a rich garden loam to build up enough energy for next year's flower production.
