When planting iris rhizomes, plant horizontally with the roots going down and with the eye just below the soil surface. Do not mulch over the rhizomes. When planting other iris types, dig a hole that will accommodate the roots and position the plant so that where the roots meet the stem is about 1 inch below the soil surface.
