Prairie Trillium (Trillium recurvatum)

With their petite, tri-petaled blooms in unique shades of deep purple to brown, Prairie Trillium is the perfect perennial for accenting those often difficult landscapes. Plant this U.S. native in sun-dappled areas where the brightly mottled foliage can easily be admired. Very nice in rock gardens where the delicate blooms contrast with the naturally rugged backdrop. A dependable grower that requires no special care or maintenance to thrive, Trillium recurvatum is often found growing wild along the trails in the country's state parks. Blooms reliably from April to May in zones 4-8. Butterflies love this low-growing beauty.

Growing Tips

Planting Instructions:
Best grown in a moist shady woodland garden setting. Plant so that the top of the root (sprout) is 1" below the soil line. Firm soil and water well. Trillium recurvatum does best in neutral to slightly sweet soils (lime). Note that most other Trilliums prefer acid soils.
Soil Moisture:
Moist, well-drained, deeply organic soil is best.

Acidic Soil, Clay Soil, Loamy Soil, Sandy Soil
Pruning Instructions:
None. Picking a trillium flower does not kill the plant but damage will result if the green leaves are taken as well. The leaves are needed to provide nutrients for the plants to survive.

Winter Care:
Mulch in late fall for added winter protection.
Planting Depth:
Plant so that the top of the root (sprout) is 1" below the soil line.
Watering Requirements:
Keep soil moist in the spring-early summer. Plants may go dormant prematurely if the soil dries out and this has a negative effect on flowering next year.
Fertilization Requirements:
When grown in organically rich soil, fertilizing is normally not needed. To promote flowering fertilizer can be given in early spring.
