Planting Louisiana Irises

Native to the wetlands of the southern U.S., the Louisiana Iris' green, strappy foliage looks attractive for several months. Most Louisiana Iris bulbs bloom in early to midsummer and attract hummingbirds. Plant Louisiana iris bareroots with the eyes just below soil and approximately 24" apart. For more iris planting information, read our Louisiana iris care blog.

Where to Plant Louisiana Iris

Louisiana Irises are ideal for planting along the edge of streams or ponds, or in other moist areas. Unlike bearded iris, they prefer moist conditions and usually do best with about an inch of water each week.

Louisiana Irises require normal to moist soil and benefit from a yearly gift of fertilizer. They are native to the southeastern part of the country and are best grown in full sun to part shade. In the past, it was believed they would only grow well in acidic soil, but they do equally well under slightly basic conditions.

What Zone and Climates Are Best Suited For Louisiana Iris

Although they originated in the Southeast, Louisiana Irises are adaptable to several climates. Louisiana Iris plants are hardy in most of the United States and can be planted in zones 4-10.
