Planting Fritillaria

When to Plant Fritillaria

Fritillaria bulbs should be planted in September or October. Because the bulbs don't like to be out of the ground, plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.

How to Plant Fritillaria

Planting Fritillaria bulbs varies slightly, depending on the type you're planting.

  • Fritillaria imperialis (Crown Imperial) - Plant these fritillaria bulbs in light shade about 5-6" deep and 8" apart. Fritillaria meleagris likes moist soil, rich in organic matter and can handle being planted in areas with poor drainage.

  • Fritillaria meleagris (Guinea Hen Flower) - Plant in light shade about 3-4" deep and 3-4" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.

  • Fritillaria michailovskyi (Michael's Flower) - Plant in full sun to partial shade about 4" deep and 2-3" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.

  • Fritillaria persica (Persian Bell) - Plant in full sun to partial shade about 6-8" deep and 6-8" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.
