My garden is small so I have added lots of plants and color to punch the space up. Total garden size is 25 feet wide by 30 feet long including the brick court yard. Originally the small yard was simply covered with grass and a few lawn chairs. I decided rip out the lawn and create a tropical looking oasis complete with water features and loads of color , shape, textures and my version out of control "cottage style". My thought was also to include plants and flowers that had a long season of bloom and were not overly invasive. Palms, cycads, and many tropical bulbs were the base of my garden, from there I added color as a highlight to punch the yard into almost a explosion of nonstop show-stopping colors.
