Dianthus 'Firewitch'
Dianthus 'Raspberry Swirl'
Double Peony 'Alexander Fleming' |
Dear Gardeners: Tulips and Daffodils aren't the only plants that bloom early in spring. Several of our perennial plants are wonderful additions to the early garden and perfect for planting in fall. When perennials are planted in fall they have plenty of time to establish a good root system, but they don't bother trying to make very many leaves or flowers. This means that all of their growing energy is devoted to making roots. These healthy root systems result in stronger plants that can survive for years and years. For a great companion to Tulips, try the Dianthus 'Firewitch.' It's hot purple-pink flowers play off of the bright Tulips tones beautifully. The Dianthus 'Raspberry Swirl' is especially pretty when it blooms near a pure white Daffodil. Astilbe, Peonies, and Poppies are all great garden perennials that are especially well adapted to planting in fall. As a matter of fact, considering that they all like similar garden conditions - part sun, rich soil, and good drainage - you could even make a beautiful garden with just that trio of plants! Phlox is another great spring perennial to plant with Daffodils. However, don't expect them to bloom at the same time, the advantage comes after the Daffs have finished. The Phlox quickly grows up and masks the dying foliage of the Daffodils, then it blooms in late spring. That way you never have worry about cutting back the Daffodil leaves! Happy Gardening, |
