Dear Gardeners:

Grandparent's Day is coming up and it makes me think about all of wonderful plants that were popular in my grandparents' time. Not surprisingly many of those plants are still popular today, you simply can't argue with time-proven reliable heirloom plants!

Take the Hyacinth for example... I'm sure you can tell it's one of my favorites because we carry such a fantastic selection every year. Heavily fragrant, colorful, and sturdy the Hyacinths haven't changed much over the years. The only exception is the addition of new colors like orange and yellow.

One of the most exotic flowers that were popular in our ancestor's time is the Turk's Cap Lily. Although it has never been as popular as something like the Hyacinth, it really should be. Its tall stems are ornamented with stunning pendulous flowers that stand out a mile in any garden.

The German Irises are another Heirloom plant that has been popular since... well, almost forever, you can even recognize it in the ancient royal heralds of Europe as a fleur-de-lis.

Of course there are always excellent choices of modern cultivars of heirloom favorites like Giant Phlox, Dianthus, and Peonies. These plants have all the charm of their predecessors, but with added disease tolerance, hardiness, color, form, and vigor. These new plants make it easy to create a garden with heirloom appeal and modern ease.
