Dear Gardeners: Who doesn't love a Coneflower? These eco-friendly native plants are bright and sunny, colorful, attractive to birds and butterflies, tolerant of sun, heat, and drought, and great cut flowers too! The Superhero of the garden, the Coneflower rescues even the toughest garden spots. Like any superhero, though, the Coneflower does have one weakness... underdeveloped root systems. Every gardener must ensure that each bare-root Coneflower is encouraged to develop deep and vigorous roots. During its first season in the garden the plant should be watered deeply and conscientiously. From planting to the first frost don't let the plant dry out and do not overwater it. Use a good 1 to 2 inch thick layer of mulch to help regulate soil moisture. Next spring, when the temperatures start to rise, have faith in the Coneflower... it can be slow to reemerge. Just when it seems that all is lost, when the soil warms up enough the plant's leaves and flowers will appear, just in time to save the day, or the garden at least! Happy Gardening, |
