Gardening is an activity for all the senses; sight, touch, sound, taste, and one of my favorites smell. Many modern garden plants have been hybridized to the point that they are very beautiful, but have little scent in their petals. This is such a shame because the fragrance of flowers, like Bearded Irises, can be intoxicating, invigorating, and bewitching.

I like to plant strongly scented flowers near sidewalks so that passers by will get a whiff of delight from your yard. Try planning Oriental or Asiatic Lilies for their knock out perfume. More delicately-scented flowers are best used where visitors pass slowly or stop and sit. Plant Hyacinths in a pot near the front door. It's easy to enjoy the sight and smells of Daylilies when they surround a casual porch or patio. Dianthus, also known as Sweet William, is a delight when it drapes over retaining walls nearer to the nose than when planted on the ground.
